Picking the Right Tree for the Spot
A tree planted in the wrong spot is a removal ten or twenty years early. Before anything goes in the ground, Derek Biernacki walks the yard and talks through what's overhead, a power line or a roofline, what's underground, how much sun the spot actually gets through the day, and how big the species will be at maturity, not just how it looks in a five-gallon pot.
Species selection also has to survive a Northern Bergen County winter and the clay-heavy soil that shows up on a lot of Oakland properties. The goal is a tree or shrub the owner will still want in fifteen years, not the fastest thing to get in the ground this weekend.

Watering, Mulch and Fertilizer on a Schedule
A newly planted tree does most of its dying in the first two summers, almost always from too little water or the wrong amount of mulch piled against the trunk. Live Oak Tree Service lays out a watering schedule with the owner at planting, mulches correctly in a ring rather than a volcano against the bark, and schedules the fertilizer that gets a young root system established instead of pushing top growth it can't support yet.

Staking, Guy Wiring and Wrapping
A new tree gets staked and guy wired only as much as it needs to survive Northern Bergen County wind while its root system takes hold, never so tightly that the trunk can't build the taper it needs on its own. Wrapping protects young or thin bark through its first winter. Both come off on their own schedule; a guy wire left on too long girdles the trunk it was meant to protect.
